Default Organizing my day - 06-01-2007, 03:18 AM

I am a work at home writer. I try to find time to work ( I freelance) and end up stressing when I get close to deadline, and then going full tilt until I finish an article. Ideally I should write every day, but sometimes being at home causes me to have to handle things around the house. Suggestions?

The best way to solve this problem is setup a time schedule for you. Break your day apart in hourly intervals. Assign task to those hourly intervals and work on the projects at hand. Assign specific times you can handle things around the house. With a little practice and patience this will eventually become a habit and help you get your projects done before the deadline date.

Working from hom you also have to deal with family and friends. the best thing to have is a home office with a door. Close It!

Let you family know that when it is closed you are only to be disturbed in an emergency.

Same with friends, you have to let them know that just because you work from home does not mean they can drop in anytime.

Yes i absolutely agree with above post...

i work from home as a webmaster and before i built my office i was constantly getting disturbed with people at the door, family, friends, unnecesary phonecalls etc..

in the end i had to spend a bit of money and converted our attic into a small office where i can go to work... I got myself a seperate phoneline for work related issues and told my family that i was incomunicado at certain hours during the day unless it was an absolute emergency.

It can be hard at first but if you enforce certain rules, after a short period people begin to accept them and you get left alone..

but in summary

a seperate office/room is an absolute must..

hope this helps and stick at it.. you will get there in the end

Yes, i would make a completly different room, and enforce rules like ozonew4m said. This will help you a great deal.

I wish I could do that but during the day I am the only one home with my boys who are only seven and five. But I have found that I try to do alot of my work at night when the boys go to bed. It is nice and quiet and I actually get more done then trying to do it during the day with all the interuptions.

This is a common problem for any home worker. I think there are thousand reason to get distracted. So the best way is to set up small goals and try fulfilling it before time.

As a self employed worker I try to adhere to a regular schedule as much as I can so that my work gets done.

You have to set days aside for certain things. Schedule your week out on paper. Split the days if you have to. Then stick to it.

I try to do that but end up spending more time trying to organize than it seems worthwhile!
