Exclamation Tip for dealing with email clutter - 05-31-2007, 01:54 AM

Are you one of those people that are snowed under with work emails and never seem to be able to clear out your inbox?

If you are, here is a tip for you. One of the first things to do is to only have messages that sent to you, ie: not CCed or BCCed, in your inbox. If something has been sent to you as an FYI it is a lower priority and should dealt with in a non busy period of the work week.

Create a new folder call it something like CC or whatever works for you.
Then set up a rule that automatically marks it as read and moves all cced and bcced mail to this folder.

That way you still have them all in a safe location but you can focus on more important issues.

That's a helpful tip. I just end up letting this clutter up. I leave a lot of my email messages unread instead of taking the time to delete them. Yeah I should probably delete them here pretty soon cuz it's taking up too much room on my account.

My tip on this is to archive, not delete. It sounds like you have limited account on the work server, a bit stupid in these days of cheap storage but that is another matter.

I would therefore archive these sorts of emails on your pc at work. it takes them off the server and thus reduces your account but you still have them if you need to access them at a later date.

If you don't know how to archive, ask one of your it dudes or the alpha geek in your workgroup.

That is a very good idea. I am terrible when it comes to my email. That and I never want to delete anything but there comes a time when you don't need those emails anymore. I have to make time to go through all those ones I have been saving that I really don't need anymore.

I have several mail accounts and I receive a lot of mails per day. I have set up a mail client where all the mails come and automatically gets stored in different folder. So I just have to see the new ones.

I think Windows Live Mail is great in this regard.

I must be doing something wrong because I have to physically move them to the folder that I have specific subjects for. Is there a way that I can designate emails going into a particular folder without me having to move them? The most junk mail I get are from financial newsletters. Some come more often than others.

This is a great idea. I didn't know that you could set it up to automatically mark that kind of stuff read and move it to a folder. Now I have to go looking through my mail options!

I find it so arduous to even move these emails. I try and keep only 500 emails from two accounts into one place. I don’t even have the time to read all of the financial enewsletters I have subscribed to so I am wondering if I should just unsubscribe. I am starting to live by the rule now that whatever I don’t use, I toss, especially when it comes to material stuff. Now I am doing it with online stuff. It simply isn’t worth having clutter in one’s life.

I have asked my friends who forward emails to please leave me off their list. I don't have time to read them and then they just clutter my box up.

Also I don't read emails from people I didn't give my address to. I go through and delete the ones I don't read and the rest I read and delete as I see necessary.
