So how do you all file your coupons? I have a file folder and I was filing them by expiration date and type of coupon. But I am thinking about doing it by aisle now. I shop at the same places and know the aisles by heart so I am thinking of labeling the files my the number on the aisle.
I remember growing up, my mother had this little wallet with all these dividers in it, that she used. I can never find them anymore. I know I should spend more time with the coupons but I'm terrible... if I don't find it in the paper that week, chances are, I'm not going to use it simply because I can't find any good means of organizing stuff. It just ends up more paper laying around.
I need to be better at organizing my coupons from here on out. I find that I just throw them in a pile and when I go to the store I try to find the stuff on the coupons and go from there. I'm a tight budget right now and I need to save as much money as possible.
I do my coupons by aisle and then also look online for coupons on items I am out of. There are several sites that let you print out coupons on your printer.
I use an old plastic box that was designed to sort canceled checks. I keep a lot of coupons and the box is a good size for me.
My method of shopping is unlike most people's. When I go to the grocery store, it is to buy whatever is on sale that I need. I buy 90% of my items when they are on sale. Then I look for a coupon for those items to reduce the price even further.
A long time ago I was able to reach the point where I had nearly every ingredient in the house for every recipe I used. I have the room to keep multiples of things. When there are only one or two of an item remaining, I put it on my "watch" list. As soon as it goes on sale, I search my coupons and buy the quantity I have coupons for.
Because I shop in that manner, it is better for me to keep my coupons organized by category. I can quickly locate a coupon when I make up my grocery list.
I have saved a great deal of money using coupons. I have been documenting what I spend for a couple of years now. Oddly enough, I have spent a monthly average of $251 each year for the last 2 years. That amount is spent on groceries, personal hygiene products, light bulbs, batteries, pet supplies, cleaning products, paper products, etc. There are 2 adults living in our house, plus 3 cats. Also, that amount includes items for donation to the food bank.
In fact it's because of the food bank donations that I began documenting my spending at the grocery store. I was using coupons and buying for them when items were on sale and I had a sufficient quantity. It seemed like I was buying so much to donate that I began to wonder how it truly was impacting my finances. I was astonished to discover that everything I bought averaged out to only $251 per month or $63 per week! It is important to add that we were not eating out, therefore needing less food at home. DH and I were going out to eat approximately once every 6 - 8 weeks. So the groceries purchased were our only source of food.
Coupons are in our Sunday paper. I spend approximately 10 - 15 minutes cutting coupons and filing them in my box. Couponing is not for everyone. But it definitely saves money!
