Default File cabnets at home - 06-15-2007, 03:44 AM

More than just a great idea. I have on and it has saved me a bunch of time and space. I usually keep a small pile of papers for about a week then I go through them and file the stuff I want and throw out the rest. My file cabnet is packed but I know where stuff is.

I LOVE using file cabinets for stuff. It comes in so very handy. Everything you need is right at your fingertips and it seems like it takes up a lot less space.

This leads to one question. What about the file cabinets? How often do you go through those? How many months/years worth of bills do you keep?

I usually go through my cabinets at least four times a year It never fails that something ends up in there that I don't really need to keep long term.

I think I've mentioned my "active" file cabinet and my "archive" file cabinet in another thread. The active one is in the home office, the archive cabinet is in our condo locker. Both have shelving units on top of them.

I retain income tax receipts for about 10 years, which I believe is 3 more than the Canadian government here suggests.

Truth is I don't use them for bills at all. I'm a writer and I use it to keep my files and manuscripts in there. I also use it to keep important papers and documents in and stationary. My kids school papers are in there with important phone numbers and the clubs they might want to join. I use it all the time to file papers I need so I don't have them laying around.

It's convient.

I agree. File cabinets must save a lot of space, especially during the school year. Thanks for the tip!

I just made a post regarding that which you may (or may not) find helpful. Here is the link to that post: Dealing With Paperwork.

My post is about the 8th one down. It is important to note that I do not need to keep papers for tax purposes. That's a whole other ball game!
