Default How to organize computer data - 06-01-2007, 08:16 AM

Hi,

Tell me how can I organize the data on my office PC. My PC is a piece of clutter, all my data is very disorganized and difficlut to find.

I cant find the important files when I need them, there are 2 partitions in my hard drive, and probably hundreds of folders and thousands of files in them.

How should I organize all that so that I can find whatever I need in just 2 clicks?

What sort of data is it?

Without know what it all is, I would suggest some type of file search program. The search utility that comes with windows is very poor.

I use Copernic Search and find it to be excellent. You can not only search via file name but also the text inside office, pdf and text files.

Google have a similar program, I have not used it but have herd very good things.

Phaedrus is right in his suggestion to use a desktop search utility like Google Desktop. This will search any file you need in just a few seconds. But it will not "Organize" your data as you asked.

You have to organize your data yourself. One way to keep things organized in your PC is to make separate partitions/folders for separate things. Like keep all the office work related documents at one partition, windows and softwares to be installed in one partition, movies, music and fun files in one and just like that. If you dont have so much partitions, you can use separate folders.

This will keep all your data organized in your PC.. I hope so

This is the problem many face. I think we had a similar kind of discussion somewhere else in this forum. The best way to organize things should be to keep files in meaningful folders. Just break things up. Like you have files for your office work. Now create year-wise folders and keep your files in them as per relevance.
