I try to make room in my fridge by putting similar products in the same section such as meat, dairy etc. and clearing out any junk i don't need occassionally. it'll at least make it look a bit more organized and finding things will be easier. if the majority of the fridge is dominated by items like large baking dishes, try using stackable containers, they don't take up as much space. | | | | Junior Member | | Posts: 5 Join Date: May 2007

I clear out my fridge once a week on trash day. Otherwise it just overfills too quickly. | | | | Junior Member | | Posts: 6 Join Date: May 2007

yea, cleaning out the refrigerator would also waste a lot of energy, since you're most likely keeping the refrigerator door open. but i guess the best way would be to keep your refrigerator neat regularly and keep from overfilling your fridge. | | | | Junior Member | | Posts: 6 Join Date: Jun 2007

have lots of transparent stackables of all sizes (they are very cheap), masking tape and a fine point sharpie.
when you have left-overs, put them in a stackable...then tape a strip of masking tape on the side facing you and write down the date you placed it in the ref. if after a couple of days it still is there.... then bring it out and give it to maybe a homeless person or at a shelter. make sure that it is not spoiled! u dont want anyone getting sick.
if you have had them for a week or more...THROW THEM AWAY. | | | | Junior Member | | Posts: 2 Join Date: Jun 2007 | | | power consumption -

Another important consideration is the power consumption. If your fridge is cluttered, there are chances that your fridge is consuming more power than it should actually do as per your actual requirements. | | | | Member | | Posts: 41 Join Date: Jun 2007 Location: Central, Texas

As you put food away upon your return from the grocery store, group your items together for storage: condiments, dairy products, meats, fruits, vegetables.
Refrigerator manufacturers have practically done this job for you, with crispers for fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs, cheese, butter all distinctly labeled. No brainer, right? Not only will you find foods quicker by looking at the labeled storage containers, but these areas of the fridge are cooler/warmer for a reason, to keep a particular type of food at optimum temperatures.
Use the deep door pockets for tall items, either condiments or beverages. Group them together as much as possible for easy retrieval. Sometimes it helps to place shorter items (mustard, relish, short tubs) in a shallow tray that you can pull out.
* Routine Matters: Once a week, purge your fridge of old foods. Just drag the old trashcan right up and toss items in. (Tip: do this on trash day or you will create a terrible smell and breed bacteria in your garbage can.) | | | | Member | | Posts: 63 Join Date: May 2007

SInce I live alone, my frigerator has never been a problem. Mostly salads and sandwiches for meals so no leftovers to store. I do clean it out every month or so. Maybe there is something to be said for being single? | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
