the amount of time you keep the paperwork usually depends on the type of file
for example: tax returns: seven years. I heard before that the IRS has 6 years to challenge your return if it suspects you cheated. therefore, seven years or so should be pretty safe.
bills: one year to permanently - bills for purchases such as cars, computers etc should be kept for proof of value for insurance purposes.

Are you sure on that? I know that here in Australia it is 7 years for both personal and companies. With Akari saying the same for the US and I believe it is the same for England. I would not be surprised that it could be close to this length in Canada.

Better to be safe and all that.

7 years to keep tax stuff on hand. That's such a waste of space. Not only does the govt make you pay taxes, then you have to store it all.

Well if you do your taxes online like I do mine are all saved in my Adobe. Saves me alot of space and clutter. But yes I would agree that you should keep them for up to seven years. Now my utility bill and that kind of stuff I keep for a year and then get rid of them.

doing your taxes online and saving them on your computer is a pretty good idea. it'll save paper, time, and space. what are some good programs or websites for taxes?

i think you should keep almost past six years tax receipts or returns data in safe. Computer is the best way for keeping your all data safe because it is a cheapest idea.

I also heard it was 7 years in Canada. Plus, I was talking to a friend who informed me that I had to xerox all of my receipts because the carbon doesn’t last that long! I didn’t do it because it too much work but she said that they won’t count a receipt if they can’t read it.
