Default Pack Rats - 05-31-2007, 07:55 PM

Who else is a pack rat here? Well I'm a semi pack rat, or maybe it's just an addiction. I have numerous skateboards that I just can't seem to get rid of or want to part with, even though I don't ride them. My significant other doesn't want to get rid of anything, he's got to be the ultimate pack rat.

Default The stuff you own - 06-01-2007, 12:13 AM

To quote Tyler Durden (Fight Club)
"The things you own end up owning you"

While collecting a lot of stuff can start out as a minor pain. It can become a major problem in later life. The clinical term is called hoarding and while it usually does not really kick in until middle age it has to start somewhere.

I have watched a freind of mind compelely loose control with it. She lived in a huge house that was packed to the ceiling with junk. Of 12 rooms only 3 were usable because the rest were full.

I don't consider myself as a pack rat. But my hubby is. He is always bringing things in and expecting me to find a place for it. I have 3 kids and not much space for storing. I hate clutter and I am surrounded by it. If I try to throw things out while he is here, he wants to know what it is.I had a yard sale once and vertthing that did not sell , I took it and donated it and forced myself not to even think about it.

Yes, it's very difficult. This behaviourism goes hand-in-hand with those who have schitzotypal personality disorder too, hence why you hear the tales of the strange people who are rarely seen outside of their house, but are discovered with stacks upon stacks of newspapers, magazines, books, what have you. Sometimes just saying "pitch it," isn't all that easy.

They just did a show on this the other day on one of those news shows. I had to leave the house as they were talking about pack rats but would have loved to have seen it as I think I am one.
