Unhappy Yarn, needles etc - 10-04-2007, 05:30 AM

Hi everyone. Like most knitters/crocheters, I have lots of yarn, crochet hooks (in repeats) and knitting needles etc. I just don't know how to organize all this. None is junk, as I did donate yarns that I knew I wouldn't use, but the yarns I want to keep I just don't know how to sort. Anyone have any ideas for me? Thank you

Mine are all in a Rubbermaid bin.

My yarn supply is basic: 4 ply, sport weight, fingering weight. I have mine sorted by the weight:
  • 4 ply is further broken down into: pastels, primary colors, other
  • sportweight is all baby colors (pastels)
  • fingering weight is all baby colors
Since my projects are primarily for babies/children, this sorting system works for me. If I had other needs (all the varieties of the new yarns), I'd have additional categories.

Another way to sort would be by the basic colors: white, ecru, yellow, orange, red, purple, blue, green, brown, black. That's how I started out until I refined it to suit my needs.

So you can sort by colors or by need. HTH.

P.S. You didn't ask, but I have my crochet hooks (repeats included) sorted by letters and numbers. (Numbers = the thin metal ones used for thread crochet.)They were purchased individually decades ago, so they didn't all come in a neat little pouch. I've always stored them in the old fashioned zippered pencil pouches (school supply).
