Pest Control Household Hint: A household hint that you may not know about is that many species of ants hate the smell of mint. In fact, the tradition used to be to plant mint outside the kitchen door, partly to keep ants away.
The next time you see a line of ants invading your home, try this household hint. Cut open a mint tea bag and sprinkle a pinch of it across their path. In many cases, they will go out of their way to walk around it rather than go through the mint.
There are a few different ways to use mint to your advantage when keeping ants out of the kitchen. Planting mint outside your kitchen door is one, of course. Ants will sometimes just find another way to the kitchen though. For this household hint, a more direct approach is best. A drop of mint oil in the corners and along the back edge of your cabinets will keep mint-avoiding ants at bay.
