Key Concepts for Small House Organization

If you live in a small space, small house organization is essential to keeping clutter under control. There are many specific ideas to keep your small living space clutter free.

First, define zones to make small house organization a more strategic process. Each area of your home should serve a purpose, such as an eating zone, a relaxing zone, or a sleeping zone. If every area has a distinct purpose, you will be less likely to leave unnecessary clutter in a particular zone.

For example, if you have a predetermined space that is for your bill paying, you will be less likely to leave bills in your kitchen workspace. This helps with small house organization. You will also know not to store bed linens in a zone designed for bathroom towels, or to keep office supplies in your limited kitchen space.

Next, if you are serious about small house organization and you feel overwhelmed by the process, focus on a small room to see what you can accomplish in a short amount of time.

A great room to organize first is the bathroom, which is limited in size. You can organize a bathroom in most cases in as little as one afternoon, and you already have a predetermined use for the space. Clearly, you know that what you are to keep in your bathroom are toiletries and towels, and little else.

You can use this knowledge to practice throwing out unused products and seeing the results of small house organization on a miniature scale in the bathroom. That can motivate you and give you the confidence to tackle the rest of your space.

Small house organization is also greatly aided by the right containers and space saving storage solutions.

You may want to invest in an armoire that can offer extra clothing storage in the bedroom, or a series of decorative boxes in the living room to house a DVD collection.

An Ottoman with storage inside is also great to tuck away guest linens. Items of this nature that serve two purposes are perfect for small house organization and you don’t sacrifice style for the added function.

Small house organization is easy if you keep the right mindset. If you find yourself getting distracted or feeling like you can’t complete a project, divide tasks. Set aside one hour, and set a timer. Within that time, choose a reasonable goal, like sorting through the books on a rarely used bookshelf to see what must be kept and what can be sent to a charity. Within only one hour you will have gotten closer to your goal of an organized space.

"You've given me inspiration to start a clutter free life."

Madeleine Andersson

Just to say big thanks. I am definitely slowly making a major effort to clear...I am not tempted to even think about what I have just gotten rid of. It is a case of out of sight out of mind. Thanking you. My mind even feels more organized and it's a good feeling!

Yours faithfully,
