How to Organize Your Garage
Knowing how to organize your garage is a step towards winning the battle of clutter that goes on in more than half of existing homes.
Boxes stacked haphazardly that look like they could fall any minute.
Rusty nails, screws, and bolts littering the floor and shelves.
Tools so disorganized you only find what you need after buy a new one, making the shelves even more cluttered.
And, worse yet, having no room for the car!
If this sounds at all familiar, then it’s time for you to organize your garage!
Step 1
Clear it out. That’s right, I said out with everything! The best way to organize a small, extremely disorganized space is to clear it out completely and start over!
Step 2
Install or repair shelving. If you don’t have shelving in your garage to help you organize, you won’t get anywhere. If the shelving isn’t sturdy, it will surely fall when you load it down with heavy tools and boxes. Better yet, shelving on the walls will allow more room in the middle for your car!
Step 3 Gather your materials. If you think you’ll have a lot of junk to get rid of, you might want to rent a small dumpster. Get fresh boxes if you notice that any of the ones you are using are ripped or badly damaged. Get a black permanent marker for labeling, trash bags, and a large box for anything you might want to give away. Gather up some old coffee cans while you’re at it; they work great for organizing all of those nuts, bolts, and nails! Step 4
One step at a time! Go through each item you took out of your garage. Decide if you need it or if it is junk.
If you can’t remember the last time you used an item, and it has little monetary value, chuck it. If you do decide to keep it, put it in a neat pile with like items. Sort bolts, screws, and nails into the tin cans. Label everything!
Step 5
Now put everything back, but not the way it was! Place like items together on the shelving.
Place heavy boxes on the floor underneath. Line up your tin cans and tools neatly.
Large tools that can be hung on the back wall by a nail should be put there to open up more of your shelving space.
Step 6
Move in that car!
