Getting Organized With Proper Planning...In Writing
Do you have your plans over the next two weeks mapped out in writing?
I'm sure you can wing it for the most part, like you already
know you have to get up, get ready, go to work or school, take
care of someone in the family...
But what about the other things that need to be taken care
of? I'm sure there's plenty to do.
Do you really expect to remember everything that needs to be
done?
Listen, unless you have a bigger brain than most people, the memor doesn't work as great as it did when we were younger. (I remember an old boss of mine used to tell me he had a great memory, but it was short.)
The thing is, it's impossible to remember everything you've got
to do.
That's why it's so important to keep everything in writing and
make sure you know what's in the pipeline.
What needs to be done? Plenty. But you need to know specifically what's in your plans.
If you try and "wing-it" and attempt to get organized and complete specific tasks without having your short term and long term plan in writing, you're probably going to multi-task, jump from one thing to another, and get next to nothing done.
Or a little of everything will get done... but nothing substantial.
And the older we get, the more we require of our brains and
remembering simple tasks becomes a little more difficult.
So it's too hard to get anything done unless it's written down.
And I don't mean writing on the back of an envelope or on sticky notes that get stuck to the bottom of your shoe.
Use a notebook and dedicate it to your to-do items. Or get one of the fancy daily planners (Daytimer or Franklin Covey).
As long as you have a dedicated system for staying on track and remembering what needs to be done day-by-day, you'll accomplish quite a bit.
All you need to do is stick with three items a day.
And give each item a specific timeline, too.
It could be as simple as this if you were, for instance, organizing your kitchen.
Wednesday Morning:
Tackle three drawers (one at a time) and write it specifically in
your planner for a single day like this:
#1: drawer left of fridge - 7:00 am to 7:15 am
#2 drawer right of stove - 12:15 pm to 12:30 pm
#3 drawer 2nd below left of fridge - 7:45 pm to 8:00 pm
As long as you're specific as possible with your organizing
plan and you give yourself a specific timeline, it's a lot
easier getting things done, one step at a time. |
